Withintrification stands in stark contrast to traditional gentrification by prioritizing community agency and local empowerment in the revitalization process. Unlike gentrification, where external forces often dictate changes, withintrification empowers existing residents to take the lead, ensuring that development aligns with their needs and aspirations. It fosters a collaborative approach where community members actively participate in decision-making, preserving neighborhood identity and mitigating the risks of displacement. The Phoenix Arts and Innovation District (PHXJAX), hosts regular community meetings, providing a platform for neighbors to actively share their insights, voice concerns, and contribute to decision-making processes.
Withintrification principles are already being applied to address the challenges currently faced by our community. Through Regenerative Placemaking, we seek to co-create spaces that not only sustain but also actively contribute to the well-being of our residents and the surrounding ecosystem. At Phoenix Arts and Innovation District (PHXJAX), we are focused on innovative strategies being implemented to foster holistic community revitalization. From the establishment of community gardens and green spaces to the promotion of local entrepreneurship and cultural and artistic expression, PHXJAX prioritizes initiatives that regenerate the social and economic fabric of the neighborhood. Our adoption of green building practices and renewable energy solutions will contribute to a healthier and more resilient urban environment for our local community.
